Coating Application Case: "Hard Disk Slider"

Introduction of examples of ultra-thin film technology aimed at achieving dramatic performance improvements in hard disk drives.

To achieve a dramatic improvement in the performance of hard disk drives, the thinning of the slider head protective film has been considered. With the nano-spacing of the head and disk, a harder and more elastic carbon film is required to minimize wear caused by contact between the head and the disk surface, leading to the demand for a dense film with excellent corrosion resistance and no pinholes. The ta-C film produced by the FCVA coating method has been widely adopted in the industry as a carbon film that meets these performance requirements and offers excellent productivity while being particle-free. 【Application Examples】 ○ Conventional DLC films posed practical issues in the thin film region below 4nm. ⇒ The use of ta-C films has enabled the practical application of 1.5nm thin films. ○ In vertical magnetic recording systems, the application of ta-C films as a disk surface protective film is also being considered. ⇒ Challenge: There is a need for faster coating compared to sliders. What is a thin film?

The thickness of the film is a nano-level coating! The material is evaporated or knocked out to form the coating.

"Thin film" is referred to as "hakumaku" or "usumaku," and generally refers to a coating (film) with a thickness at the nanometer level. In a vacuum device, materials (such as metals) that are to be made into a film are evaporated or sputtered to form the coating. Because it does not use a "liquid" like wet plating, it is sometimes called "dry plating." Our equipment allows for thin film fabrication methods such as "vacuum deposition," "ion plating," "sputtering," and "plasma CVD." For more details, please feel free to contact us. 【Thin film fabrication methods available with our equipment】 ■ Vacuum deposition ■ Ion plating ■ Sputtering ■ Plasma CVD *For more details, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us.

Tohoku University Technology: High Mobility ZnO Thin Film on Transparent Film Using Electron Beams

Flexible transparent electrodes can be fabricated using inexpensive ZnO (zinc oxide)!

■Introduction of Tohoku University Technology (T19-673) The further evolution of wearable devices is expected through the performance improvement of transparent electrodes, which are semiconductor materials. ZnO is a representative conductive oxide, and its application to transparent electrodes is desired. Although thin film fabrication methods such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD), atomic layer deposition (ALD), and sputtering have been established, there has been a challenge in forming them on flexible substrates like resin without compromising conductivity. This invention enables the production of ZnO thin films with excellent conductivity and an unprecedented stable structure on PET by irradiating ZnO particles with electron beams.

Tohoku University Technology: Polycrystalline Heusler alloy thin film: T20-2968

Polycrystalline Heusler alloy film exhibiting performance comparable to that for a single crystal, which can be formed on a flexible substrate

Co-based Heusler alloy such as Co2MnGa or Co2MnAl has attracted attention as candidate materials for high-sensitivity sensor and high-efficiency thermoelectric conversion element thanks to their large anomalous Nernst and Hall effects. In order to realize these excellent properties, it is thought that a single crystalline bulk material or a thin film grown on a single crystalline substrate is necessary. Thus, such single crystalline samples have been produced. Considering that those materials are applied to actual devices, it is necessary that a polycrystalline film, which does not use a single crystalline substrate, shows the property equivalent to those of single crystalline material. This invention is able to provide a “polycrystalline Heusler alloy thin film" that does not require a single crystalline substrate, while showing the properties of anomalous Hall angle (θAH~7.5%) and anomalous Nernst coefficient (SANE~5μV/K) comparable to a single crystalline thin film. It can promote the control of crystal orientation and the improvement of crystallinity by sandwiching the polycrystalline layer with an insulating AlN layer.

High hardness film "PVD/DLC treatment"

Surface modification treatment that applies plasma technology to coat hard thin films at low temperatures.

Our company applies high-hardness coatings such as TiN, TiCN, CrN, TiAlN, S-AH (multi-element nitride), and S-AX (composite treatment film) to the surfaces of metal products using the Arc Ion Plating (AIP) method. Additionally, we apply high-hardness DLC coatings to the surfaces of metal products using the Unbalanced Magnetron Sputtering (UBMS) method. DLC exhibits a low friction coefficient even on soft materials like aluminum and lead alloys, which are prone to adhesion, and it has excellent anti-adhesion properties. [Overview] ■ PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition): A physical vapor deposition method ■ DLC (Diamond Like Carbon): An amorphous carbon hard film primarily composed of C and H *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

[Analysis Case] Local Structure Analysis of IGZO Thin Films by XAFS

Evaluation of valence, coordination number, and structural order of metal elements in oxide semiconductors.

The IGZO thin film, a transparent oxide semiconductor, is being researched and developed as a TFT material for displays; however, there are still challenges regarding the stability of TFT characteristics for practical use. To address this issue, it is important to elucidate the IGZO film formation mechanism. By clarifying the electronic states of metal elements and their local structures in IGZO thin films through XAFS analysis using synchrotron radiation, it is possible to gain insights into the IGZO film formation mechanism. This paper presents a case study of local structure analysis of IGZO thin films using Zn-K edge XAFS spectra.

[Analysis Case] Local Structure Analysis of Aluminum Oxide Thin Films

It is possible to capture changes in the fine structure of the film due to differences in film formation conditions.

Aluminum oxide is used in various industrial machinery and manufacturing equipment parts due to its excellent wear resistance and heat resistance. Additionally, its chemical stability and high insulation properties make its thin films suitable for applications such as catalyst supports and insulating layers in magnetic tunnel junctions. The evaluation of the fine structure of aluminum oxide films, which can take on amorphous structures or various crystalline structures depending on the film formation conditions, is effectively conducted using XAFS. This document presents a case study of the quantitative separation of coordination structures (AlO4, AlO6) in amorphous aluminum oxide thin films.
